~ the beginning ~
Megan-Jane and Drew met in high school. “He was older, so I was nervous he wouldn't be interested! But we got to know each other through friends and quickly realized what a great fit we were. I’m so glad we got to have those years together because it’s so special to know your spouse at that time of life! It was great because we got to grow-up together,” recalls Megan-Jane.
~ the proposal ~
“Drew and I knew early on that we wanted to get married, but he still made the proposal a complete surprise! Last summer I was invited on his family’s special vacation to Europe and I was thrilled to go. I had been to Paris once before and loved it, so he knew it was one of my favourite places. While in France, we took a day-trip into the city with his family, but he took us on a detour of our own to explore the city. Of course, I was eager to go to the Eiffel Tower, which fit perfectly with his plan. We got there just as the sun was setting. He took me across the street and pretended to set the camera up to take a picture—but when he came back he got down on one knee and asked if I would be his wife. I was so surprised and overwhelmingly happy! His family had planned to meet us after, so we got to see them and celebrate. Then the two of us went for a romantic dinner. It was one of the best nights of my life.”
~ wedding day ~
The couple was married on July 3, 2010 at Megan-Jane’s family home. Event Planner Soha Lavin of CountDown Events helped Megan-Jane and Drew create the wedding of their dreams. “Soha helped us take our vision to reality by helping with each detail of preparation, as well as coordinating the day itself. She had excellent recommendations for vendors that fit our style, and assisted us in visiting them and planning out how we would use their services,” recalls Megan-Jane.
The bride wore a Romona Keveza gown from Blush Bridal. “As soon as I put it on, I knew this dress was exactly what I always wanted. It was simple and elegant, while still youthful and fun. I felt comfortable and radiant!”
Megan-Jane’s jewelry held special meaning. She wore pearl earrings that were a wedding day gift from Drew. A very special locket was also presented to Megan-Jane from her Mother. “My mom had engraved a locket with our monogram. Drew and I both wished our grandmothers could be there, but two of them have passed away in recent years. The locket held a picture of each of them, and I pinned it to my bouquet.”
~ familiar location ~
The reception tent was set up in the backyard of Megan-Jane’s parents’ home
and was a stunning scene for a fresh summer wedding. The ceiling of the tent was covered in white paper lanterns that glowed into the night reception. The tent completely encompassed the family pool and giant crystal chandeliers hung from the centre creating a sparkly reflection in the calm blue of the pool water.
Decorator Colin Upright of Upright Decor transformed the tent into a modern summer wonderland by using one long banquet-style head table along one side of the pool. A cluster of round tables sat on the opposite side of the pool. Each of the tables had a blue runner placed down the centre topped with a silver vase filled with white hydrangea, lilies, and sweet pea blossoms.
Silver julep cups with orange rose buds circled the larger arrangements. All floral for the day was created by Suzane Lee of Granville Island Florist.
Postcards were on hand for guests to leave a note, then were collected by Megan-Jane’s mother and slowly mailed back to the couple after their honeymoon.
A special thoughtful gift at the reception was the orange pashmenas placed at the chair of each female guest. Each pashmena had a note attached saying “Grab someone and snuggle!”
Guests enjoyed a sumptuous meal catered by Louis Gervais Catering. “I love the importance of family dinners in Italian cooking, so we served modern Italian food.” remembers Megan-Jane.
~ sweet details ~
Peter Fong from Ganache Patisserie created a cake with blue and white fondant icing inspired by a tea room that Megan had seen in Buckingham Palace. There was also a lavish dessert bar featuring all sorts of sweet decadent treats to match the orange and blue colour palette of the day.
“We wanted it to feel like a beautiful but relaxed family event. We had a dessert bar so that our friends and family could get up and mingle with each other. I loved celebrating such a special day in the house I grew up in. It made it all so magical,” remembers Megan-Jane.
The couple’s honeymoon took them to a resort in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. “We had an amazing time just sitting at restaurants along the beach, talking about this amazing new phase of life. We were so excited to be husband and wife!” ♦
