How did you meet each other?
At a New Years party in Vancouver - we both ended up at a party where we didn't know anyone, ran into each other in the kitchen and didn't stop talking for the rest of the night.

How did Darren propose to you?

We were travelling through Uruguay and had finally found our paradise, Punta del Diablo. It had been an incredible day of lounging, surfing and laughing together. We happened upon a deserted beach and walked together for miles. I was taken by the millions of seashells and was scouring through them looking for the perfect specimen. Meanwhile, Darren had been carefully crafting his Spanish proposal in the sand. I failed to take notice, and three of his efforts were sabotaged by crashing waves before I finally wandered over. Unfortunately, my Spanish lessons failed me and I mis-translated his inscription, thinking that he was asking if I wanted ice cream. I agreed without hesitation, as it had been an exceptionally hot day. And when he got down on his knee, presented me with the most beautiful seashell I had ever seen, and proposed, in English this time - I ecstatically said yes.

What was your favourite moment on your wedding day?

Darren: The moment that I first saw Amanda in her dress - she took my breath away.
Amanda: During the ceremony - staring into Darren's eyes, hearing the beautiful prose of our vows, being completely overjoyed that the rest of our lives would be spent together.
What advice do you have for other brides?
Have fun! Relax, take a deep breath, look around you and enjoy every moment of it.

My bouquet was cascading in oranges, hot pinks and fresh green. It was accented
with starfish Swarovski crystal brooches and wrapped in material from my mom's veil.

Was there a specific theme or mood you were trying to achieve on your wedding day?
Beach elegance - we wanted it to be comfortable, reflecting our love of the outdoors and the ocean, but also pretty and elegant, in keeping with how momentous of an occasion it was.

How did you personalize your wedding day?
Together, Darren and I designed or decided on every single aspect of the day. We truly felt like all details reflected us as individuals and as a couple. Most of our vendors either were close friends (Tanya Anderson, Paper Umbrella), family (Jay Basbas) or grew to be close to us during the planning process. I think because of that, the entire wedding was incredibly personal. One special detail was a table in the reception area where we displayed our guest book (created with engagement photos by Jasalyn and Jason) which was surrounded by photos of our parents and many grandparents on their wedding days. As well, we made sure to have plenty of flip-flops for all of our friends and family.

What was your biggest "splurge" during the planning process?
Our photographers. We knew immediately, and without hesitation, that our photographs would be the most cherished piece of our wedding day. We wanted the best and are ecstatic to have found Jasalyn and Jason.

What was the most luxurious aspect of your wedding?

The location! Rockwater was an amazing host to us, but even better than the delicious meal was the absolutely breathtaking nature that surrounded us. And the tent-suite that Darren and I stayed in truly was our fairy-tale. We could lie in the luxurious king size bed, soak in the incredible hydrotherapy tub or dine on our private patio, and be completely surrounded by arbutus trees and the Georgia Straight. It was as though we had our own secret cove.
