a chapter in history
Jojo and Brandon were married on November 24, 2007 at The Carlu in Toronto, Ontario. Brandon had proposed to Jojo in June with an incredibly romantic and well thought out plan. “He packed a picnic dinner, made up of all my favourite foods and we laid down a blanket and had a picnic in the park. After dinner, Brandon brought out a surprise. He had made a scrapbook filled with photographs of our three years of dating. Brandon had been “working” late nights and weekends for weeks prior to this. I learned that these late nights and weekends weren’t actually spent on his work; he was creating this scrapbook all that time. The last page of the scrapbook had a big red heart on it. Through that red heart there was a pink ribbon with the engagement ring tied to it. Brandon then asked me to marry him. We were crying and laughing and just elated. He then brought out champagne and strawberries and we called our families and had them join us in the park to celebrate,” recalls Jojo. On their wedding day, Jojo wore a custom gown by Kim Ironmonger of Valencienne. The gown was designed for Jojo and featured a bubble skirt (with pockets) and a three-inch belt cinched at the waist. She wore an antique ring—a gift from her paternal grand-mother—with priceless sentimental value. Jojo’s grandfather had bartered for the ring during WWII.
moderne love
Event Planner Naomi Serkin of Naomi Serkin and Associates planned a 1930’s Art Moderne inspired day for Jojo and Brandon to compliment the architectural interior and history of The Carlu. The bridesmaids wore raw silk custom dresses by Valencienne in a soft champagne colour. The bridal party carried bouquets by Forget Me Not Flowers. The square ceremony Chuppah was wrapped in white satin and featured a Hampton chandelier hanging from the centre point. To customize their day, the mother of the bride (Bonnie Greenberg of R.S.V.P. Studio) created a monogram using a font reflective of the 1930’s era. It was printed in black on the inside of the kippahs, the front of the program and on the front of the mini translucent envelopes used for the seating cards.
inspired details
The reception took place in the Round Room. The interior of this room had been the initial design springboard for the entire event. The signature monogram was creatively applied as five-inch black decals to mirrored charger plates. Centrepieces of large palm fronds sat atop tables dressed in black linen with small crystal detailing. Each centrepiece was placed on round mirrors, reflecting the light from the hanging votives on the palm fronds.
sweet little detail
The sweetest detail was a nod to one of Jojo’s personal trademarks. “Since I am an avid baker and my friends and family know me for this, I thought it was appropriate to have a Cookie Bar at the end of the night. It was stunning! It was situated in the foyer on a lucite bar so when guests left the reception they could choose any cookies they wanted to take home. On the bar, cookies were displayed in square glass containers, nestled between Lugano crystal candlesticks.” The flavours of the cookies included: White Chocolate Chunk, Milk Chocolate Chunk, Oatmeal Raisin, Shortbread Toblerone and Skor Bar Brittle. After a fun-filled memorable evening, the couple enjoyed a two-week honeymoon in Maui and Kauai, Hawaii (with a 2-night stop in Las Vegas beforehand). The couple now reside in Toronto.
